To support their Seedrs crowdfunding campaign

Crowdfunding videos have been a part of our offering since we began, and we’ve delivered for brands who have wanted that extra support with their campaign videos.

We tend to adopt a different approach to a crowdfunding video depending on whether it’s an equity raise, or offer perks in exchange for investment. Where perks are part of the offering, such as with Kickstarter we focus on producing a video similarly to a brand film or product video. Audiences for these videos are more akin to consumers, and so it’s important to communicate as much about the product and it’s USPs as possible. It’s akin to any product video where you’re actively encouraging a purchase.

With an investment platform, such as Seedrs, you’re campaigning for investment, and your audience changes – and so does your message and therefore so does the construction of the crowdfunding video.

A Seedrs video needs to convince an investor of the strengths of the business, the market opportunities and the character of the business owner as much as it does the product or service that it represents. In this way, it’s structured a little more like a case study – but it still has to be watchable and compelling – as the competition for views is huge.

How we made it: Synergised UK’s Crowdfunding Video

Crowdfunding videos can actually be slightly more templated than other video types without sacrificing watchability or effectiveness. That’s because it’s the information that’s most import, moreso than the video looking ‘flashy’ or over-produced.

For Synergised UK, we supported right from the start – our client had a really good outline script that we amended the order and some of the formatting so that the key highlights went right up top, and then contained all for the important aspects. You still need a ‘hook’ of sorts – if you can imagine how many crowdfunding videos a potential investor must get through, you need to find ways to pique their interest and keep them watching.

Once the script is in place, most of the other aspects fall into place. We focus on the founder interview(s) which lays the foundation and provides the skeleton of the story and the content, and we support that with highlighted key text, what we call b-roll or cutaways that demo the product, or illustrate its use, and then where possible with include something from the customer base for some social proof.

In this instance, the brand has lots of content already available, which gave us a greater variety of shots to play with in the edit, and it allowed us to spend more time getting the interviews right. Not all founders feel comfortable on video, but that’s our job to get them there. Some need more time than others – and it has been known to take almost a full day to capture those with more nervy founders when on camera. Paula at Synergised was pretty well seasoned, and was very comfortable, so we could afford more time to perfect lighting and verbal delivery.

A quick tip – don’t be afraid of using an autocue, it helps. Especially if you’re nervy, stressed or time-poor, remembering your lines then becomes one less thing to worry about!

The location here was also very important to us. We had to find one with the right aesthetic to fit the brand, which isn’t too hard to do when you have the width of London to choose from 🙂

The last piece of our puzzle in terms of production was hearing from two customers, who were happy to chat about their experiences. These have to be completely real – we can all tell when they’re scripted – and once again, our job here is to make them feel happy and relaxed on camera so that we can get the best from them. This adds huge value to the resulting video.

A quick turnaround on the edit, and voila: one crowdfunding video. Not to under-sell my edit team’s input here, but given the right raw materials and guidance and the edit process can be pretty zippy. We find that allowing a minimum of 3-4 days for a crowdfunding video is the sweet spot. There’s enough room for us to take care over what we’re crafting, and this also gives room for review and feedback without having to rush.

Paula Benedi of Synergised UK had this to say about her experience with us at Pocket Creatives:

“Working with Pocket Creatives was a fantastic experience! They were not only quick and efficient but also detail-oriented. The team’s professionalism and creativity made the filming process smooth and enjoyable. Highly recommend them for any video needs!”

Crowdfunding videos can make or break a crowdfund campaign, so it’s important to get it right. Finding the right balance is crucial, so that you don’t overload with content or just repeat all of the same information that’s in the textual elements of the rest of your pitch.

We’re always here for help or advice, even at an early stage – so feel free to reach out if you’re about to consider crowdfunding and we’ll give you the benefit of our experience of how you crowdfunding video could take shape.
